Spring Cleaning and Deodorizing Carpets

by Penny Keay © 2012

Now that Springtime is here and before certain areas of the country get bombarded with HIGH humidity, Humidity that can cause carpets to develop unpleasant odors, you might want to do some ‘freshening’ up of these odor collectors.

Odors can be caused by dirt or soil. These naturally harbor germs such as bacteria and fungus that as they break down organic materials – ie skin cells etc, cause odors to be released.

If you don't have time to give your carpet a proper shampoo and cleaning you can do a quick deodorizing by adding a few drops of essential oil to baking soda and sprinkle that on the carpeting.

Let this sit for a minimum of 15 minutes up to an hour prior to vacuuming.

Good oils to try include:  Lemon, Clary Sage, Geranium, Bergamot, Lavender, Grapefruit and Lime. You can use stronger scents such as Peppermint or Eucalyptus but because they have tendency to linger longer and not smell so refreshing but overpowering.

Remember all essential oils have antibacterial, anti fungal, anti microbial and antiseptic properties. If the odors are coming from any of these sources, the oils will help destroy the odor causing bugs too.

Here are a couple Carpet Deodorizing blends you can try.

Carpet Cleaning and Deodorizer
6 Tablespoon Borax
Lemon - 3 drops
Clary Sage - 1 drop
Lavender - 5 drops
Grapefruit - 1 drop

Mix all ingredients and sprinkle on a small carpet.  If you have a large room you may need to blend a larger quantity.
Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes and then vacuum thoroughly.

Borax also helps to kill little ‘creepy crawling’ insects. So working a bit of this down into the carpet fibers is a plus.

Remember though if you have pets or small children do not let them be on the carpeting until you have thoroughly vacuum the ‘powders’ up.

Carpet Deodorizer for Large carpeted rooms
Baking Soda – 1/2 cup
Spearmint – 2 mL
Tangerine – 2 mL
Lavender – 2 mL
Cassia – 1/2 mL (or 10 drops)

Blend all together, mixing until all the ‘lumps’ are gone.

Then sprinkle on the carpeting, lightly brush in with a broom.

Let sit for 15- 30 minutes then vacuum thoroughly.
