Traditions, Memories and our Sense of Smell

by Penny Keay

During this busy time of the year we like to reflect a little about things that are important to us all: Family, Friends, co-workers and neighbors; we are always trying to get priorities in order to keep us all sane and at ease; Trying not to get too stressed.

Trying to relax, sit back and be Thankful for that which we have and pray for those that don't.

This year we think of those away from home, whether it be at war, at school or displaced by the acts of nature.

We have hope that everything in your lives will be fine. This time of year we have many memories that are being made.

Everyone’s sense of smell is a “mighty sense” as it can trigger many memories – both good and bad.

On a recent episode of CSI: Las Vegas, they had a girl whose memories were triggered by her sense of smell that took her back 10 years.

Those memories, triggered by the scent, helped to bring her closure when they helped the CSI’s solve the demise of her family that occurred 10 years earlier.

While we watched this telecast, it made me think of how much and how important our sense of smell is.

Our sense of smell, not only, alerts us when there is danger – such as smoke or other potential hazards – chemical spills or gas leaks, but can trigger fond (or not so fond) memories to come back to us too.

It helps us enjoy our meals, helping to complement our sense of taste.

Our memories can be enhanced, heightened and increased by many essential oils, with the best known to be Rosemary.

Blend this with Basil and Lemon and it helps you to retain and concentrate better too.

It helps your senses to recall later on when you once again link these scents with certain thought processes.

We encourage you to use these oils if you are a student and need to increase your memorization during your studies. Concentration Blend is our premix of the above listed essential oils.

Your sense of smell has a way to “lock” a memory and then when the same scent is smelled later, will become the “Key” to release the memory.

These ‘lock and key’ chemical reactions happen within your brain.

Although we are not scientists and do not completely understand these reactions, we do know they occur. Most of you have experienced this and didn’t even know it was happening.

Traditions during varying holidays or family gatherings (weddings, funerals etc,) all can be made extra special by using essential oils to help ‘Lock” those memories in place. Then later on when the scent is smelled again the “Key” will unlock those very same memories.

As a child growing up, each year we would gather as many of my aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, nephews and nieces to have our traditional Lutefisk supper on Christmas eve at our home.

My mother was a full blooded Swede so we followed her family’s tradition of Lutefisk and Swedish Meatballs.

Needless to say, they have very distinctive smells and are part of my memories that are triggered when I smell them again.

More specifically, the spices that are used to prepare these foods will trigger the memories.

Although lutefisk has its own unique smell that is definitely not a spice of any kind!!

We hope you have family traditions too. The scents at this time of year vary from family to family.

Since we have an artificial tree, we of course use our essential oils to 'fool' everyone.

Our tree looks very real and once we add some 'fir needle' oil to a few terra cotta decorations throughout the tree, everyone thinks it is real!!

For me, another scent I remember as a child was that of Black Spruce or Spruce trees, for these were the Christmas trees we had as I was growing up.

Every year, we would take a walk into the 'Dismal Forest' (as my father called it) to cut down the Christmas tree. The 'Dismal forest' was a very large black spruce swamp directly behind our house.

It was only accessible in the winter, once the ground was frozen. The trees are so thick, and the forest is dark. No wonder my father called it 'dismal'.

Although it appeared that way as a child, as a grown up, we are just in awe at how beautiful and serene it is out there in the middle of the wilderness.

When our children were growing up, we too, took them into the 'Dismal forest'. We expounded on the annual event and turned it into a 'winter picnic'. We roasted hotdogs, marshmallows and had hot cocoa. All in the middle of the forest! More smells to trigger memories!

There were years where we could not get into the Dismal forest due to too deep of snow and we had to settle for a Balsam Fir just on the edge of our property.

The Douglas Fir or Siberian Fir needles are both very similar and are what many consider the 'Christmas tree' Scent.

Everyone thinks of different scents and smells that remind them of the Holidays and family gatherings.

What are your Favorite smells during the months of Winter? Do you have favorites you diffuse to create those memories that will be triggered many years from now? If not, then, maybe you should think of some to diffuse.

Who knows, years from now, when you get a ‘whiff’ of that same smell, you will have triggered a time (memory) when life may have been more simple or more. Essential oils will help create those memories now.

For the Car Ride Home after the Holidays

Rosemary - 5 drops
Lime - 4 drops
Bergamot - 3 drops

Blend all of these in a small amber bottle. Then apply 2-4 drops on pad of your car diffuser. If using a terra cotta type diffuser you many want to add several drops.

This recipe will also work great to help any student stay awake and alert while studying.
