Don’t try to reinvent the Wheel when you are New to Aromatherapy

A special issue for all those “Newbies”

Blending your own products

by Penny Keay

You have discovered these wonderful things called "Essential oils" and they do such great things.

You add them to your routines of skin care, your health care, to prevent unwanted viruses, bacteria and fungi. You love diffusing them into the air as they help you to feel happy, alive, awake, are calming, gives you confidence, you can concentrate, focus, fall asleep and the list goes on.

Yet, you are new, a "Newbie" or, maybe you are not, maybe you have been using them for a while but would love to start to become more ‘Creative’.

The commercial products you are using have so many unquestionable ingredients or you just want to make something up that has fewer and more natural ingredients.

Where do you begin?

First, “do not reinvent the wheel!” So, you might ask, “What am I talking about?”

Well, oftentimes, someone asks us to help him or her make a product for say - ‘skin care’.

They have dry skin and have been using a product that has a great list of ingredients, most of them natural plant based. They want to make it themselves or something similar using essential oils and maybe change a few of the natural ingredients.

Now, I am not saying you should not try to replicate the product but if this is your first attempt at blending a more complex item then you need to do your homework.

Have you been reading all about aromatherapy, essential oils and skin care?

There are many great books written by experts in the field that have shared their recipes. They have printed them in the book or on a website to help guide you.

We have a half dozen or more books we purchased and read them too, just when we were getting started. They have basic recipes for making all sorts of skin and hair care items.

We are constantly adding to our Reference Library. Mostly we buy books that we can page through and make notes. We do have a few e-books too. They are harder to make notes in, so we use a paper notebook or notes in our word processing programs.

Anyway, first, try a few of their recipes you find. It is possible; there may be one or two recipes you really will like. All you have to do is follow the recipe!

We are not manufacturers nor are we chemists. We know the basics about making lotions, creams or shampoos etc., but this is very basic. IF I choose to make any of them, I follow somebody recipe(s). They have done all the experimenting and I prefer not to waste my ingredients if I attempt it myself.

The point is - you might not have to create a whole, new product. You might be able to ‘tweak’ a recipe that someone has already used or created that just needs you own personalization.

Find a Book with Recipes

We have a recipe book and website that have hundreds of recipes. Start there. As I said, “do not reinvent the wheel”. Just take a recipe that ‘works’ for you and make it your own. Personalize it.

Once you have followed the recipes and ‘tweaked’ a few, then you can venture out on your own. At that point, you will not need to ask for any help, as you will have the confidence to try new things all on your own.

You are going to be ready and will have learned the processes needed to make your own products.

Be creative, have fun, but start with the basics. Get a few books. Amazon or other booksellers have hundreds of titles to get you started. You can even “take a peek” inside several of them to see if you want to purchase them or not.

Here are a few ideas:

Have fun and learn along the way. Take your time, you have a lifetime of using these wonderful natural gifts!
