PHYSICAL AILMENTS
ASTHMA
& BRONCHITIS
Having asthma and bronchitis can be a
stressful affliction. When your bronchi and muscles surrounding them become
narrowed, breathing becomes difficult. Many things can cause or trigger
an asthma reaction. Air born allergens, food allergies, chemical sensitivities,
exercise and even hearing upsetting news.
Coughing and wheezing result as you attempt desperately to breathe.
Asthma is or can be a serious medical condition and should never be taken
lightly. Please follow your doctors instructions.
Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchi. Again this can be caused by
many of the same triggers for asthma. Thick mucus accumulates
as the bronchial walls are irritated and inflamed. It can be difficult
to expel this mucus. Often times bronchitis will develop at the end
of a cold or other upper respiratory infection.
In both cases, you should always consult your physician before implementing
aromatherapy. Trying to avoid offending allergens of course will
greatly reduce any attacks. In the case of bronchitis, getting plenty
of rest is also important.
Aromatherapy can help to open airways and make breathing easier.
Essential oils help to clear congestion, reduce inflammation and thin excess
mucus so coughing is more productive.
Essential oils helpful with asthma include Clary
sage, Cypress,
Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Lavender,
Lemon, Marjoram, Peppermint, Myrrh,
Pine, Rose, Rosemary,
and Tea tree.
Essential
oils helpful with bronchitis include Cedarwood,
Cypress, Elemi, Eucalyptus,
Frankincense, Helichrysum, Lavender,
Lemon, Marjoram, Peppermint, Myrrh, Orange, Pine,
Rosemary, Sandalwood and Tea tree.
Helpful
to relieve and soothe coughs include Basil,
Black pepper, Cedarwood,
Clary sage, Elemi,
Eucalyptus, Ginger, Lavender,
Marjoram, Myrrh, Pine,
Rose, Rosemary, Tea tree and Thyme.
When making blends for any
health concern - remember the best is to try one or two oils to start with.
Try never to blend more than 5-6 oils together at one time. Below in the
Recipe section is a recipe to try for asthma and bronchitis relief.
We also recommend you continue to study and read about aromatherapy and
essential oils. Please remember to purchase or borrow from
the library - books on Aromatherapy.
EMOTIONAL CONCERNS
NERVOUSNESS
Everyone
at one time or another will experience a feeling of nervousness. This can
stem from a feeling of anxiousness or even something that might be causing
us to feel a mild panic inside ourselves.
For me - getting up in front of a group will make me feel nervous.
Again, essential oils to the rescue. Carry a tissue with a
few drops of Lavender or Bergamot and sniffing can often relieve nervousness.
Others
feel they get relief with Frankincense,
Roman Chamomile,
Clary sage, Coriander,
Geranium, Mandarin,
Melissa, Jasmine,
Cypress, Nutmeg,
Vetiver, Neroli
or combinations of a couple of these oils. Try a couple of
oils and use them about 1 hour prior to situations that make you feel nervous.
And after your feeling calm, remember to use a little while longer!
HEALTH & BEAUTY
WARTS
These unsightly little skin
blemishes are caused by a virus.
These hard growths can be difficult to eliminate and can take a long time
before they are completely gone.
There are several essential oils you can use to help resolve these small
hard growths. Tea
tree, Lemon
and Cinnamon Leaf
are affective against these growths. We recommend using lemon oil
first - apply 2 drops to the wart and apply a Band-Aid. Do this daily for
a couple weeks. If you see no improvement, you may need to try tea tree
next. Again, apply a couple drops and cover with a Band-Aid.
Cinnamon leaf should
be tried last. Cinnamon
is a skin sensitizer and so caution should be used. This should never be
used on children or the elderly. Cinnamon
leaf should be mixed with a carrier oil such as jojoba oil.
To 1 teaspoon of Jojoba
add 10 drops cinnamon
essential oil. Blend well, then apply to wart and cover with
a Band-Aid.
If you know of other oils that have worked for you please let us know and
we'll pass it on in our next newsletter.
AROUND THE HOUSE
AND GARDEN
BATHROOM
CLEANER
To give
your bathroom a fresh clean smell use any citrus oil added to your rinse
water as you clean the fixtures, sink, tub, shower or toilet bowl.
Favorites include Lemon,
Lime, Orange but give a try to Lavender, Lemongrass and Bergamot.
Or get a little more adventurous and use Mandarin,
Tangerine or Pine
needle!!!
Add
2-3 drops to your water. All essential oils have disinfecting
properties in varying degrees. So while adding scents to your room while
cleaning you are also disinfecting!
An easy
spray room freshener can be made by adding a few drops to distilled water
and spritz in the bathroom a couple times a day. Shake the bottle well
before spritzing to attempt to mix the essential oils with the water.
