Don’t you just hate the smell of burnt foods or cigarette smoke?
I sure do.
There really aren’t any essential oils that will destroy odors but what they can do is to help to alter the offensive odor producing molecules and refresh the air so it is more pleasant to breathe.
There is nothing that really can destroy odors except maybe baking soda. Who wants to sprinkle that everywhere and have to wait for it to 'do its thing'?
I know I want the odor to quickly disappear. Opening the windows helps, along with a strong fan.
We live in Northern Minnesota and in the winter this isn't always a option when it is below zero! Burrrr!
When the commercial room sprays are used, they alter the odors in the air to make them less apparent. Many of those commercial sprays are made by using petro-chemicals that only mask the odors and are also detrimental to your health.
We don’t smoke at all but we do cook. Every one that has used a stove knows that one of the things that can happen, especially when you are not paying attention, is to apply too much heat to the pot of food.
It, of course, has to boil over and next thing you smell is burnt food! I hope that it wasn’t the whole pot of food, just the spill over that burned in the drip tray. Oh, but what a yucky smell!
A few essential oils really do help remove the odors more quickly than others. No only to help remove odors and but for refreshing the air too.
These are the citrus oils. Lemon and Orange oils are the most common. Our favorite is Lime essential oil. It appears to be better than the others are but is often more expensive.
Adding the Lime to a little Cedarwood and Lavender and you will have a great combination that will beat most offensive odors.
Some folks will add a little Pine Oils to this blend but I’m not a big fan of Pine essential oils for deodorizing, so prefer to leave it out. Pine though is great for cleaning – think Pine-sol.
Try this Blend next time you need to eliminate odors:
Cedarwood – 10 drops
Lavender – 8 drops
Lime – 8 drops
Lemon – 6 drops
Orange – 6 drops
Emulsifier – 2 ml (may need more)
Room Spray base – 8 oz
Blend the essential oils together, add to the emulsifier. Blend until the essential oils stay mixed with emulsifier (add more emulsifier if needed) then add to the Room Spray. Shake well and spray the air and other surfaces to help eliminate the smell of something burnt.
Some folks like to sweeten the air and not make it so citrus smelling. IF you prefer you can experiment a little and substitute Fennel for the Lemon and Orange and add a little of our V’nilla’s blend (just a couple drops).
You’ll need to keep the Cedarwood, Lavender and Lime the same, as they are the real odor eliminators in the above blend!
Spruce needle – 8 drops
Juniper berry – 6 drops
Siberian Fir Needle – 4 drops
Peppermint – 2 drops
Emulsifier – 20-24 drops
Room Spray base – 4 oz
Add essential oils to emulsifier, blend well, and then add to Room Spray Base. Shake well and spray the room.
**Distilled water can be used in place of the Room Spray Base but if you do use the distilled water refrigerate up to 2 weeks and then discard.
Room Spray base has a preservative and will last for 2-3 months instead of 2 weeks.
