A Special Christmas Poem with an Aromatherapy twist

by Penny Keay

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to everyone.

I thought it would be a fun thing to take a well known Christmas Poem and see if I could give you some 'everyday' living ideas of how the people in the poem might have been using essential oils to make their life more enjoyable, especially during the holidays.

So here goes. The well know poem is on the left. The little numbers correspond to our Aromatherapy comments and suggestions.

Now, after we have finished this poem, YOU can pick your own poem, song lyrics or more and see if you can come up with aromatherapy suggestions that might be used.

Have fun, be creative. As you see, I like to do that too.

A Visit from St. Nicholas

By Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; (1)

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; (2)

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap, (3)

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave a luster of midday to objects below,

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,

With a little old driver so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick. (4)
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted,
and called them by name: (5)
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blixen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" (6)
As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;

So up to the housetop the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; (7)

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, (8)
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! (9)
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; (10)
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; (11)
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. ( (12)

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; (13)

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose, (14)

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, (15)
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” (16)

From a couple of
Aromatherapists View Point

1) Okay, so there were no mice - Sounds like they used a blend of Peppermint essential oil mixed with fiber bits and sprinkled them by the thresholds and window openings! Smart people!

2) Did Mom & Dad diffuse some Lavender or maybe even Sweet Dreams in their children’s room before being tucked in for the night? Hmmm!

3) Oh yeah! Bedtime bliss or maybe they diffused some other relaxing synergy blend oil – Relaxing or Calming or Peaceful.

4) Memory enhancement – Rosemary must have been used on a daily basis to keep the mind focused and alert, even when a little drowsy.

5) Was he using Brain Energy to keep all these names all straight?

6) Sounds like the Santa was using Keep it Moving, Muscle Warm, Muscle Relief or maybe even Painful joints to keep going on this long journey’s night.

7) Oh boy, did he leave sooty boot prints? Most likely not but if he did all you need is a little All Purpose Cleaner and a bit of lemon or orange essential oil to get things cleaned and fresh.

8) Good thing Mrs. Claus used some Back Rub or Super Muscle Rub before Santa headed out!

9) Is St Nick’s face a little red and raw from the cold weather or perhaps the flu? A little Sorbolene or Basic Cream or even better a tiny amount of Penny’s Cream will help lessen the soreness or chapping of winter time weather exposed skin. Or if your nose is sore from a cold you can use a bit of lotion too.

10) Maybe a little bit of some unscented shampoo helps to keep his beard soft and white.

11) Air Freshen blend to the rescue! Smoke smells are not pleasant and to get rid of the stink use this mixed with some Room Spray and spritz around the room.

12) Maybe Santa could use a little bit of ‘No More Grazing” in a nasal inhaler to curb his appetite.

13) No doubt a happy man – has he been diffusing Happy! Happy!! Or Ylang ylang?

14) Are you sure he doesn’t have allergies? And his nose was itching? Allergy tamer to the rescue!

15) Keep your Whistler ready and lips soft using lip balms.

16) Merry Christmas to All – enjoy essential oils and more with your family and friends this Holiday season and ALL year long!
