How are Essential oils used in Hospitals and other Medical facilities?

by Penny Keay

Essential oils and aromatherapy are increasingly being utilized in hospitals, nursing care facilities and other medical offices.

Although we cannot divulge individual patient applications we can tell you about several situations where essential oils and what blends are being used in many health care programs throughout the USA.

We have provided product and guidance to several Hospitals, Medical Centers, Veterans Hospitals and facilities over the years. Many of them are providing hospice care.

Some provide palliative and short term care also, depending on the facility. Some are birthing centers, or centers with special needs clients.

Dental and Medical offices also use essential oils and aromatherapy. Many use them subtly to help ease patients while they wait.

Diffusing essential oils or blends to alter the smell is important for dental offices that typically smell strongly of what I call the “dental office” smell. You know what I mean as we have all smelled it.

We are seeing several dental offices using alternate scents to change the way we think and feel in the dental chair.

You may be able to incorporate some of these in your facility. You can always contact us and we can give you more specifics for your particular situation.

Diffusing or applications

Most hospitals and medical facilities:

use the TruMelange or SpaScenters. Several use the Fan Fusers, especially if they have large commons areas they want to diffuse oils. All of these units can be used safely in these situations. The most commonly used diffuser in hospice units are the TruMelange. They are easy to use and very pleasing to the eye.

Dental and Medical offices:

use the above fan diffusers too but because these offices tend to be smaller, they will often times use the more decorative Electric tart warmers . Occasionally, Scentballs are used in these types of offices but more often we see Terra Cotta Discs being used in the exam room/area.

For Hospice and Alzheimer’s patients:

we see the most simple type of diffuser which is to pin on the lapel a ‘cotton ball’ with a drop or two of essential oil added daily.

For Birthing Centers

Massage oils and lotion during labor and delivery. Again these are also used in any of the hospitalized or long term care facilities. Even a simple hand massage makes a person feel better.

Essential oils or blends used

#1 is any single note or blend the patient likes – especially when dealing with hospice or long term care.

#2 Lavender - Remember Lavender is known as the ‘Mother’ of essential oils. And indeed Lavender is the #1 essential oil used throughout all of the hospitals and medical centers. Easily used 4 to 1 over other oils.

We have seen the following used in Hospitals, VA Hospitals & Hospice care facilities

Lavender, Ylang-Ylang, Bergamot, Orange, Peppermint, Eucalyptus globulus, Frankincense, Lemongrass, Grapefruit, Basil, Ginger, Mandarin, Sweet Marjoram, Bay rum, Lime, Cinnamon leaf, Roman Chamomile, Jasmine, Clary Sage

Uplifting blends – Happy! Happy!! Blend, Mint Energizing blend, Inspiration blend, Elation blend, Refreshing blend, Revitalizing blend

Calming (reduce anxiety), Relaxing & Sleep inducing blends – Calming blend, Peaceful, Relaxing blend, Bedtime Bliss, Take Five blend

Immune boosting and Germ fighters – Pure Cleansing blend, Four Robbers blend, Easy Breathe Blend, Respiratory Blend

Miscellaneous blends – My Angels, Mother Nature

These are just a few of the more common essential oils and blends we have seen used. There are others that may be useful for your particular facility. Be adventuresome and give them a try.

For specific oils and blends to use you may want to search past articles or do a search on our site for suggestions with various health concerns such as grief, sleep, energizing, etc.

Again, if you need help with choices of diffusing or oils please send us an e-mail and will help make suggestions.
