As you know I like to be a little silly and so when I decided to write an article about ‘Bunions and Bone Spurs’, of course, being from Minnesota where ‘Paul Bunyan’ is a legend along with his big Blue Ox ‘Babe’, I just couldn’t resist the urge to be silly once again.
I would imagine that having feet as big as his and having a big ox that could step on his feet, he most likely did have some problems with bunions!
Bunions can be very painful swellings of the big toe joints synovial sac (and sometimes the little toe too). It is a form of bursitis that if left untreated will eventually cause deformity of the toe and foot.
This then can result in corns and calluses forming. Worse yet will be the structural damage done to not only the normal alignment of the foot, that could also cause your gait to change.
As you gait changes it could continue up your body and eventually affect anywhere from your low back to your neck. Yeah, believe it or not your toes – feet can be the cause of some headaches.
Briefly, we’ll mention bone spurs. Although bone spurs can occur in this joint, they are more likely to develop in other bones of the foot, namely the heel, and any other joint in the body. Many folks develop bone spurs along the spine and vertebrae.
From all of our references (books and professionals) there are no essential oils that will break down the calcium buildup that creates bone spurs.
Bone spurs though can be painful. There are essential oils that can help reduce the inflammation, discomfort and pain they cause.
Peppermint, Eucalyptus globulus, Rosemary, Helichrysum, Lavender, German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile, Cypress, Clove bud, Sweet Marjoram, Juniper berry, Ginger, Black Pepper, Frankincense, Lemongrass, Geranium and Rose.
Although, the best suggestions we have given are using our massage blends that help with pain, such as Joint Rub, Muscle Rub, Muscle Relief, even our Scar Lightening Blend have helped.
The blends help as they have oils in them to help with inflammation and pain, which everyone with spurs or bunions has.
Start with a foot soak in Epsom salts to help relax the tight and tense muscles. Then massage one of the blends or you can make your own blend using a carrier oil of your choice and adding a few drops of any of the above listed essential oils. Massage for 10 minutes to start and over time gradually increase to 20 minutes.
One popular blend to use for massage for bunions is a blend using Peppermint, Eucalyptus globulus, and Rosemary in carrier oil. Castor oil is wonderful oil for use on joints, especially those affected with a bit of arthritis.
This blend will usually make the bunion feel better due to these oils pain relieving properties. But they also help with inflammation too.
Massaging the affected joint is something you should do daily. You should make this a nightly routine. And if time allows massage the joint in the morning too.
A few other things that come to mind when people have spurs or foot pain due to bunions is:
- Shoes you are wearing or not wearing – going barefoot is one cause of foot problems and/or not having a very good supportive shoe on. Spend a little extra money and buy good supportive shoes.
-You have had an injury (the injury may have occurred years ago) and now are having problems.
-You might want to see your chiropractor and make sure your toes and feet are in good alignment. Many times I have had sore feet, and when I mentioned this to my chiropractor and he checks, a few of my bones in my feet were misaligned. Once adjusted – yeah my foot pain subsided! (I don’t have bunions or bone spurs and hope to never have any.)
Al had a toe that has been giving him problems for months and he finally figured out what happened. It was injured when he reroofed our garage last year. He never thought anything about it until it started to hurt and he was walking differently, which then affected his hips and back etc.
What did he do? Besides having the chiropractor ‘unjam’ his toe He used Helichrysum and Lavender – Helichrysum (known to be great for pain relieving and anti-inflammatory with healing properties) and lavender (another oil for pain and anti-inflammatory plus healing properties).
He puts it on his toe and joint first thing in the morning, waits for a few minutes for it to absorb, then puts on his shoes on (we both buy Brooks Addictions TM, as these have been the best shoes for us, comfortable and very supportive) and within minutes, the pain is gone and he can walk normally without the ‘gimp’ when he has pain.
If your bunions have been troublesome for a while you may have developed some corns or calluses see a previous article for suggestions on how to deal with those. Click here
*Okay, for folks not familiar with the story of Paul Bunyan, he was a lumberjack. A big man, so big it is told that his foot prints formed many of the 10,000 lakes in Minnesota. He also had a big Blue Ox named ‘Babe’ that helped him log all the big pine trees that once covered the state.
For more fun reading, just type in Paul Bunyan and American Folklore and you can read all about him, his ox and how he logged Minnesota.
