Parts of Plants and their Correlation in Aromatherapy

by Penny Keay

Did you ever stop to think about all the different parts of the plants used in the distillation of essential oils and their use in aromatherapy?

All essential oils are extracted from various parts of plants.

The following parts are the most common and starting from the top of the plant.

Blossoms and Flowers, Leaves, Needles, Cones, Seeds, Grasses (Herbs), Rinds, Peel, Twigs, Stems, Bark, Wood (Resin) and Roots.

Next is the correlation to the parts of the human body where the essential oils are often the most effective.

are often used with the emotions and mind. The hormones in the body are also affected but then again, the main hormone regulatory centers are also in the head. These essential oils affect the nervous and endocrine systems. Often times these oils will have calming, relaxing, intoxication aphrodisiac and spiritual reactions.

Essential oils in this group include Rose, Jasmine, Neroli, Ylang-ylang, the Chamomiles, Lavender and Clary Sage.

There are also Flowers and plants that will be stimulating, energizing or have that refreshing affect to the nervous and endocrine systems.

Essential oils in this group include several of the ‘herb’ type essential oils such as Basil, Peppermint, Spearmint, Rosemary, Lavender, and Thyme.

The leaves and needles

extracted essential oils often help with the respiratory system just as they are part of the respiratory system of a plant or tree. These essential oils will affect your breathing by opening up the airways. They also help to cleanse the respiratory system by aiding mucous by thinning and decongesting.

Essential oils in this group include any of the Pine, Fir or Spruce needles, Basil, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Myrtle, Petitgrain and Tea tree.

are those essential oils that affect the cardio vascular system which includes the heart, blood, and the lymphatic and digestive systems. These oils will help with general well-being, and are often warming and uplifting.

Essential oils in this group include many of the citrus oils such as Bergamot, Orange, Lemon, Mandarin and Grapefruit.

The Fruit and Seeds

that affect the digestive and lymphatic systems help to restore balance and revitalization.

Essential oils include Caraway, Carrot seed, Clove bud, Cumin and Black pepper.

affect the glandular (endocrine) and immune systems but also give support to the mind and body for energy, strength, centering, grounding and balancing of your psychic.

Some of these essential oils include Camphor, Cedarwood, Rosewood, Sandalwood. Resin oils include Elemi, Frankincense, Myrrh and Cinnamon Bark.

The Roots

affect the gut or intestinal and again connect us to the ground and Mother Earth and her support in emotional dealings.

This includes such essential oils as Angelica root, Vetiver, Patchouli, Ginger and Valerian.

This list does include ‘crossover’ essential oils. As you see listed above some essential oils will be included in 2 or more groups. That is because of the various parts of the plant that may be used in distillation.

What does all this have to do with Aromatherapy?

When deciding on what oils may work the best on a physical or emotional level, we will look at the part of the plant that correlates to the situation and choose from a list of those essential oils that match the same body part.

The next time you are looking for essential oils to use for a particular ailment, don’t forget to look at the part of the plant that the oils are coming from as a helpful starting point.

The parts of the plants can help whether it is an emotional or physical problem.

Isn’t the study of aromatherapy and essential oils amazing?
