Everyone has food cravings at one time or another. It can sabotage your weight loss program in no time at all.
If you overeat due to depression, then you will feel even worse after you have indulged.
Doing research for food cravings and cravings in general was not an easy task. Many aroma therapists do not have a lot of available data based strictly on the use of essential oils.
What I did find is they don't call it “cravings”. Most of the time cravings are listed under the headings of obsessive - compulsive behavior, or over eating or over indulging, or is considered a problem along with some other underlying health issue, such as depression.
However, there are several essential oils that could help to reduce your urgency to seek out unhealthy food choices.
Anytime there is a gathering of family and friends, many of us have a tendency to eat more than we should.
Sometimes we might need a little help with will power to control the portions and our choices.
One of the best essential oils to ward off cravings is Fennel. Fennel has been used to stave off hunger pains.
The Romans and Greeks fed fennel it to the men in their armies to not only allay hunger but also to give them a burst of energy.
Women in history ate it to prevent weight gain. When people fasted for religious reasons, Fennel was the only permitted herb. Mind you, this was the herb portion, not the essential oil.
The essential oil of fennel does appear to have many of the same capabilities to reduce hunger and so is suggested as a great starting point for those of us that need to curb that craving, especially during any time of the day.
Oils that might help include: Bergamot, Cardamom, Coriander, Cypress, Dill, Fennel, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Juniper, Lemon, Mandarin, Patchouli, Peppermint, Rosemary and Spearmint.
A simple yet effective appetite suppressant blend for inhalation is equal portions of Bergamot and Fennel. Blend well, then add a few drops to a personal inhaler and take a sniff or two whenever you feel hungry or have other cravings.
For many folks you may need to use these essential oils prior to mealtimes, if you have a tendency to overeat. Smelling a few appetite suppressing essential oils may help you to control your portion sizes and not reach for that second helping.
However, for many we remind you, that oftentimes these oils should not be inhaled prior to mealtime but instead in between meals when you might reach for something unhealthy or when you really don’t need to eat.
You still need to eat to live, but this should help you get control of the excessive eating that is keeping you from losing your desired weight.
We do have a blend we created and hope this blend will give anyone suffering from any type of craving.
Our “No more Grazing Blend” has been used by several folks to help them get things under control, whether it is food, smoking or other types of cravings.
Fennel - 10 drops
Bergamot - 5 drops
Patchouli - 3 drops
Carrier oil - 1 tablespoon
Place all in a bottle and mix well.
Massage a small amount of this blend on your stomach and abdominal area and massage lightly in a clockwise direction.
If you prefer, you can use the essential oils only as an inhalant blend. Simply omit the carrier oil from the above recipe and put the essential oils in an inhaler.
You can use this blend several times a day, either, by massage or inhalation.
Please note that if you will be exposing your skin you massage into the sunlight you should omit the bergamot from the recipe, as you will have a photo toxic reaction as bergamot is a skin sensitizer when exposed to sunlight or UV lights.
